Recycling Goes in and Dog Food Comes out

A company in Istanbul solves two problems with one innovative solution.

Many world cities have a major problem with stray animals. Homeless dogs and cats have often been seen as an annoying problem, especially when they carry disease or become aggressive. Public opinion is shifting, however, and old methods like displacing or destroying strays have become unpopular. _(1)_

A city with a creative new approach is Istanbul, the most populous city in Turkey. _(2)_ Feeding such a large number of animals is a nearly impossible task, and animal charities cannot do it on their own. A company called Pugedon has offered up a new solution―a machine that is one part recycling bin and one part vending machine, not for humans but for dogs.

Pugedon's recycling bin accepts plastic bottles in a small hole. _(3)_ There is also a water dish that allows people to empty out their water bottles before recycling them. The company pays for the kibble by recycling the bottles, and there is no additional cost to the people of Istanbul.

The idea is really taking off among the people of Istanbul because the growing population of stray animals has become a major problem. _(4)_ The problem gets worse when the strays breed, producing more homeless animals. Istanbul has been looking for a solution, and it has proposed relocating animals to nature preserves outside city limits, but the public was wary of this proposal. In 1910, a similar plan resulted in depositing stray animals on an island to slowly starve to death. _(5)_

(A) For each bottle recycled, the machine will dispense dog kibble into a bowl in the bottom.

(B) Therefore, everyone agreed that Pugedon's solution was better and more humane.

(C) Animal rights groups are working hard to make sure these stray animals get fair treatment, particularly in our biggest cities.

(D) It is fueled by the illegal pet market where purebred pets are sold to families that later abandon them.

(E) Around 14 million humans share the city with an estimated 150,000 stray animals.
