The Master of Suspense

by William Ryan

One of the world's best directors liked to make people scared of doing simple things like showering.

Sir Alfred Hitchcock is known the world over as the legendary master of suspense. He was born in Leytonstone, England, in 1899. The iconic director and producer would later describe his childhood as lonely, which was made worse by his obesity and strict upbringing. After being rejected by the military because he was overweight, Hitchcock turned to movies. He started his work near the end of the silent film era and went on to become the undisputed best director in England and one of the most respected around the world.

Unfortunately, his first few films were unsuccessful. It wasn't until 1927, when Hitchcock released The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog, that his work became a commercial and critical success. A string of box office hits followed, and by 1939, he and his wife moved to Hollywood.

During the next 40 years, scary movies became increasingly popular due to Hitchcock's influence. During his exceptionally long and productive career, Hitchcock practically created the suspense film genre. His characters were typically fugitives on the run and often wrongly accused. His stories involved violence, crime, and murder, but they were shown in a thrilling yet subtle way. This was before depictions of graphic violence had become so common. Hitchcock pioneered the use of camera techniques that maximized emotions like fear and anxiety. A well-known Hitchcock plot device is the often-used surprise twist ending, which is still imitated today. As well, Hitchcock's frequent use of humor and ironic wit in his monologues added an interesting element that pleased audiences.

Hitchcock directed more than 50 feature films between 1921 and 1976, and most of them were highly successful. He also created two TV series for American television. It has been said that without Alfred Hitchcock, cinema as we know it would not exist.
